Thursday, May 19th, 2011

If you have read my article, Free Photo Editing Software – What Features Should I Look For, then you will have some ideas of tools that are available. Although there are many editing programs available, I have used quite a few. These below are ones that I would recommend. They are all free.

Paint.net

This software is pretty straight forward and easy to use. It also offers some advanced features, such as layers and curves. It’s resizing screen showing your image only appears after you do a save. This is not bad, as long as you are aware of it.

Irfanview

Know mostly as an image viewer, Irfanview is an editor also. It has a multitude of features, such as batch resize and being able to change thumbnail sizes when viewing your images. It also offers a huge amount of image file types if you want to change the extension of a photo.

That being said, I find this program to be the most confusing to use. I do not use it regularly. I would assume that if I did, I would get used to it. It does, however, have a lot to offer.

FastStone Image Viewer

Again, great as an image viewer with some very useful features. I like that you can view both images, the original and a duplicate for editing, together. Once you have enlarged a photo to take up the full screen, various options are available by moving your mouse to the top, bottom, left or right parts of the screen.

For example, go to the top of the screen and a thumbnail strip of all of your images in that folder will appear. You can click on any image and it will then be the full screen photo. This is a useful tool, allowing you to work with a full screen image and easily see your other pics in the folder.

Web Resizer

This is actually a website. It’s strong feature is how it resizes pictures, but you can also do some simple edits. It is very easy to use. It clearly shows what your image will look like by comparing different file sizes for the same picture. Upload a photo to work with it, and then download it to save it on your computer.

Picasa 3

Picasa 3 is photo editing software, but it also offers some other things. As an editor, it has a wide range of tools, divided into three categories. It’s other features are that it is an image viewer and organizer. You can also send your digital photos to an online printer. If you choose to use Picasa Web Albums as an online photo sharing site (and for storage), you can sync it with Picasa 3 so that edits and changes made in Picas 3 will automatically be made in Picasa Web Albums.

You can download any of these free programs and try them out. Although none does everything, you will most likely find one that meets most of your needs.

When Does Photo-Editing Ruin The Image?

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

In some photos the preservation of megapixels is essential. Often even a minor change in resolution can mar the overall look. That may be the key to right editing. Many high definition digital cameras still lack the right megapixel range. Often a glare or red eye reduction needs careful editing too. Photo editing can be used to bring unlimited appeal to such pictures. Even the change in color can bring a twist in the entire image. True, photo editing, that involves several photo correction processes mainly does the job of creating perfect images. But, alas not all photo editing, services are reliable enough unless they have experienced professionals. Since a number of steps are required to create a perfect photo, even minor mistake in any of these steps can cause damage to the final product.

Here are some of the major causes that can ruin the images by novices or individuals who do not have any idea on how to use the photoshop software. The same in the hands of a professional can work wonders.

Selection of the wrong process- An efficient photo editor must have the knowledge about all the different procedures. It is only through detail knowledge that one can choose the right procedure for any given image. A latent sense of beauty is required to select the right process for the image. For example, if an image with imperfections requires photo retouching, then only photo retouching can bring in the right quality for the image. If the image is subjected to some other process, then the final result is bound to be dissatisfactory. Similarly, if for any particular image, image retouching is not the choice and it is wrongly administered, then the final result is sure to be a disaster.

Secondly, after the right selection o the process, it is important that the process is carried out perfectly. Many of the process involves several steps, any distraction in any of the following step can cause severe damage to the quality of the image. It is important that the professional who is practicing the procedure must have complete knowledge of the job.

Photo editing is a fine job and requires patient handling. It is also important that the minute details are taken into observation and treated with perfection. Any job done hurriedly can bring in imperfections and can consequently ruin the image.

Use experienced online photo-editors

Lastly it is important that the photo editing process is done by an experienced professional. Such professional has the right knowledge and the right experience. They can use their best judgment for each and every image and hence select the right procedure and then carry it out with perfection.

But, if the basic procedures are followed with perfection, the disaster in terms of the final quality of the image can easily be averted. It becomes important in cases of images that have historical value. Often experts chose to work with the copy first before attempting to correct the master picture for better results.

The Different Types of Photograph Image Format in Which you Can Save your Data

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

With the use of digital cameras there are a few things that come into play when you’re taking your photographs and one of those things is the photograph image format you take your photographs in. For example, with the film cameras you had the option of using color positives, color negatives, black and white positives or black and white negatives.

This was a photograph image format that your photographic data was stored in. The same applies with digital cameras as well, and there is a photograph image format in which you can store your photographic data. It has nothing to do with positives or negatives this time, and everything to do with bits and bytes and how the little micro processor that reads the data from your memory card.

When you take a photograph, the information that the camera sees through the lens is stored on the memory card in a language that the computer understands.

For our purposes there are few different photograph image format that we can choose from, in which to store the details of our photographs, and we need to decide on what it is.

Having now hopefully, successfully navigated past that I can now go on to tell you that of the different types of photograph image format in which you can save your data, there are a few that most photographers use more often than not.

The RAW photograph image format has a great many advantages to be had, and these I have to say quite negate the disadvantages, if there are any. You know for a fact that nowadays memory cards are more and more inexpensive, allowing you to own more than one or two cards. Yes, sometimes RAW photograph image format files can be larger than the JPEG photograph image format, but the advantage of having a lossless file format far outweighs the fact that RAW photograph image format files are larger.

Whereas JPEG photograph image format files compress and therefore are prone to some loss of data, RAW photograph image format files aren’t prone to this loss of data.

But the biggest advantage as far as I’m concerned is the fact with RAW photograph image format files the image data that gets saved is the most basic data of all and when you transfer this to your computer, it makes it easier to work and change things around in your photograph using the photo editing software.

The Durability Of A Photo On Canvas & Image On Canvas Are Significantly Better Than A Digital Print

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

In 1816, Nicephore Niepce invented usable photography. Although he wasn’t the first man in the world to capture images, he was the first to capture a permanent photographic image that actually seemed to last. The quest to capture images that will last for eons continues and evolves – and that evolution has produced photos on canvas. The durability of a photo on canvas is significantly better than a digital print photograph. Canvas is a durable and resistant material that can last for decades. One of the best formats for capturing a photo that can be admired for many years is through the photo on canvas process. The life of a photograph varies and greatly depends on how it was printed and what it was printed on. Photos on canvas are printed on a material that ensures longevity. The material of canvas even has a unique and charming quality to it as it gets older. If life expectancy is an issue then placing an image on canvas is a good way to ensure the image will last. Photos that are not placed on canvas have a higher probability of needing photo restoration in the future. Over time, photographs can become wrinkled; water damaged, and faded which requires a retouching process. What once was a memorable and sentimental image, transforms into an indistinguishable blur. The restoration process often has to manipulate the photo or image until it’s entirely new. Photos on canvas maintain the contrast, sharpness, and color levels of the photo. A photo on canvas will endure for a hundred years without a need for any restoration.Handle with CarePhotographs must be properly stored and cared for in order to last for longer periods of time, but photos on canvas are different. They don’t require the same amount of energy and time in upkeep as traditional photographs but last significantly longer than traditional photos. The difference between canvas and traditional photographs can also be felt and seen. The canvas photos tend to feel more in depth both physically and visually. In addition to a visual difference, photos on canvas have a more diverse range in sizes for the image. Some images can be transferred on a canvas that measures 50 by 70 inches.Things to RememberIn order to ensure that your photo on canvas lasts for a century there are certain steps that you can take. First, make sure that the photo on canvas is not placed in an area where it will receive lots of direct sunlight. Sunlight simply doesn’t mix well with any photograph, including one on canvas. Secondly, remember that water is the enemy of a photo. Humidity and moisture will slowly kill the image over time. A canvas should be stored in a dry area. Last, keep the canvas clean so that small particles in the air don’t permanently adhere to the photo over time. Often times, a small soft brush is sufficient. If you want an image to last a hundred years, a photo on canvas is an excellent investment. To have one of your photos printed on canvas, you simply need to upload your digital photo to an online company that specializes in canvas printing. Your photo will be carefully analyzed to determine whether or not it is suitable for canvas printing. Only photos that can be used to create art quality canvas prints are used, so you never pay for a disappointing end product. After thorough assessment, your photo is digitally manipulated by professional artists to ensure it will produce a top quality canvas print. If necessary, alterations are made to the image to improve its appearance. Finally, your photo is converted to the format of your choice. It may appear as a photo realistic image, or it could be altered to contain simulated paint strokes so it resembles an oil painting. Your image is then printed on your choice of canvas products.People who have some idea about paintings are well aware of the pain and time it takes to create an artwork. It is quite disheartening for a painter to get prices for his paintings that do not do justice to his effort and hard work. Therefore, the artists can think of making multiple copies of their artwork by printing on canvas and extending them by machines. There are so many ways that you can use a photo canvas. It’s one of the most versatile gift ideas you can give. If you are looking for anniversary gifts or birthday gifts, you won’t do better than making your photo into a piece of art. Here are some great tips for getting the most of these wonderful personalized gifts. If you’re choosing a photo canvas company, check on the quality of their photo gifts. Some companies may print your photo on a material with a cheap, plastic finish. Avoid those, and look for companies that use real, woven canvas, just like the material that you see in art galleries. This will give you an excellent quality gift that the recipient will be proud to display in any room in the house. Find a material that’s soft and tough, so that it’s not likely to crack. The frame choice is also important, as you need a good solid frame over which to stretch your photo canvas.
