Digital Photography Tips – 3 Underwater Photography Tips

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Photography has always been a fascinating subject to many people. Nowadays, you don’t just see pictures taken on land. You can also see pictures taken from space, air and underwater. So, for those divers who have the interest, underwater photography has become another perfect reason for them to do more diving.

Here are some tips for you if you are interested in this new hobby.

1. The equipments

As you already know, most cameras nowadays are not water resistant. Even some of the digital cameras that were designed to be water resistant, they can only be submerged underwater for the maximum of 2-3 meters.

So, when you want to practice underwater photography, you will want to get a casing to protect your camera. This kind of casing is just a transparent plastic with rubber to house your digital camera. As long as you fit your camera nicely in the plastic case, you can still access its function from the outside.

There is one thing you need to remember before you jump into water is the capacity of your memory card. Imagine that you are happily taking picture of the unique underwater life and suddenly your memory card is full. You certainly can’t change your memory card like you are on land and you can only do that at the surface. But by the time you get back to the same spot, your subject might be long gone. There is nothing more frustrating to a photographer than to miss the perfect shot and it is even more frustrating when it is cause by a small mistake like this.

2. Closing in

It is said that the things you see underwater is 3 times larger when they are on land. This is because water distorts (refract or bend) light.

So, when you are taking pictures underwater, you will want to get as close as possible to your subject. Another tip for you to keep in mind is that you need to be careful when you are photographing marine life in close proximity.

Even though some of them might look still, your flash and distant might provoke them and cause them to attack. The last thing you will want to get with underwater photography is to get hurt by your subject. So, keep yourself safe by minimizing your flash and use your zoom lenses whenever is possible.

3. Research

You are supposed to know where you are diving, right? So, research about the underwater marine life before you go there so that you will know what you are going to see. You can also assess how dangerous your subjects will be so that you can be prepared for them.

And for you to enjoy your diving and photography trip to the fullest, you can also look for any experience guide who can dive with you. When you are diving with them, there is a high chance for you to take some astonishing underwater pictures.

Action Photography

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Of all the kinds and styles of photography being practiced today, sports photography is probably the most exciting—not to mention the most difficult—of all. Since this kind of photography involves so much speed and action, photographing the subjects or players would require more than the usual knack for good angles but also the strength to endure physical limitations during the shoot.
Sports photography usually include shots that are taken during the game or while the subjects are in their respective field. Aiming to “freeze” moments during the actual event, sports photographers should be equipped with the right photography equipment, trained with enduring tenacity, and fueled with an overwhelming desire to capture each moment and emotion at their best.
PHOTOGRAPHING DIFFERENT KINDS OF SPORTS
The best thing about sports photography is that the photographer can freeze a single moment that contains pure and raw emotion and share it with the public in print. If you’re into photography and quite interested in taking adrenaline-pumping shots, you should familiarize yourself with different kinds of sports first. Since each sport varies, the styles and techniques used in capturing and freezing each moment also vary.
If you are already in the field taking photos, it is a must that you have a brief background about the sport you are covering. Knowledge in the fundamentals of coaching style, sport rules, and players will help you identify their most interesting angles. It is also a must to identify your “safety” (a shot that is easy to shoot and can be published if you don’t get good photos all throughout).
Here are some basic sports photography guidelines fit for common sports:
1. Baseball. Most seasoned sports photographers would agree that baseball is one sport that is hardest to shoot because of its unpredictability. Make sure that you get your safety first before getting experimental shots.
2. Basketball. Unlike baseball, this is the easiest sport to shoot because you only have to focus on two subjects: the player who handles the ball and the net. But its simplicity limits you to different angles, so make sure you get plenty of shots to choose from.
3. Football. This is another easy sport to shoot but it is considered as the most equipment intense sports because it would require waiting for the perfect shot. Although it’s easy to get safeties, it’s still up to you to produce action shots that would be a stand up.
4. Soccer and Hockey. Because of the speed and sudden movements involved in these sports, auto focus cameras are recommended.
5. Volleyball. Although it is one of the rarely covered sports events, volleyball is also one of favorites because dramatic shots can be derived all throughout. Since moves in the sports are quite tricky, make sure that you turn your camera’s auto focus on.
6. Golf. It’s hard to shoot photos during the game due to the nature of the game itself. What you can do is to camp at one location and take shots as players pass by or use a cart to follow the individual players.
7. Track and Field. Though access can be limited, this is one sport that is fun to shoot because movements are predictable and easy to shoot. All you need is good timing.
8. Gymnastics and Figure Skating. One basic rule in these sports: NO FLASH. Since they involve individuals performing, the use of flash is restricted because it distracts the players. The major problem you’ll encounter is lighting but this can be solved once the venue is lit up.
9. Motorsports and Racing Events. These are fairly easy to photograph because you can get away with slower lenses. But since you’re far from the track, you need longer lenses for the shoot.

Choosing Your Wedding Photographer… Why the Lowest Rate Isn’t the Only Thing to Consider

Friday, June 11th, 2010

With so many photographers available, how do you know who to choose? The first and most important thing is to make sure you’ve taken a good look at their website and/or portfolio. If their images suit the style you’re looking for, that’s a good start. But there are many other factors to consider and price should not be the most important. If you’re basing your decision solely on price, with photography – as with most things – you get what you pay for. Why? Well, professional photographers charge professional rates for a reason. They have a business to run. They also have high-quality equipment to maintain, they have years of experience and they give the very best results.

When it comes to weddings and special events, you only have one chance for fantastic photos. If you hire someone because they have the lowest rates, you run a very likely risk of getting pictures you’re not happy with. If that happens, there’s no way to reproduce or replace those moments. How can you tell what the difference is between amateur and professional photography rates? It’s fairly simple…Do some research.  Look at professional photographer’s websites and see what they’ve got listed under ‘services’ or ‘investment’. Don’t just look for photographers in your city or town; expand your search to professional photographers in North America.

Not all of us list our rates online, particularly if we customize our services for each individual client. But if you do take the time to look into it, you’ll find the following:

Standard rates for professional portraiture and headshots start at $200 to $250 an hour and can range much higher.

In most North American cities, standard rates for professional wedding and event photographers – with good reputations, good portfolios, good equipment and a wealth of experience – start at $1500 dollars for eight hours and can be as high as $5000 or $6000.

If you’re looking to hire a professional photographer to shoot your event or wedding for two or three hours, you can expect to pay a range of at least $250 to $300 per hour.

Wedding and event photography is more expensive because there’s a lot more work involved and – although it’s fun and wonderfully rewarding – being a wedding and event photographer is a very difficult job with no margin for error.

So let’s say you’ve come across a few photographers whose rates are much lower. You think to yourself ‘It’s just photography, why should I pay more for the same kind of service these people are offering so much more cheaply?’

The most basic, simple reason not to hire someone really inexpensive is this: Someone charging unprofessional rates is not a professional! Most likely they’re someone just starting out in the business, or else they’re using their photography hobby as a way to make some extra cash. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but you do run the risk that they may not know how to behave at your event or how to properly shoot it.

You wanted to hire a photographer because you’d like your pictures to look extra fantastic and professional, right? Well, if that’s true, hiring an amateur or hobbyist photographer because they’re cheaper really isn’t your best bet. It’s kind of like the difference between spending your wedding night at a Fairmont Hotel instead of at a Motel 6.

If you’re still wondering what else you’ll get for the money you pay to a professional, bear in mind that a photographer’s work is not done once they’ve finished taking your pictures for you.

In this age of digital photography, that means a photographer will spend another several days working on your pictures in a computer image editing program such as Photoshop. Someone charging extremely low rates will not be devoting much time –if any – working on the finishing touches to your pictures. You’re not just paying for a photographer’s time during your event or photo-session; you’ve also got to consider the time they’ll spend on editing and finishing your images. When you’re hiring someone to take photos, you’re also paying for the many hours of work they will do afterwards to make your pictures just perfect for you.Don’t you want the finest quality photographs you can possibly have? The best wedding photos? The best family portraits? The best headshots? The best images of your product?

If you do, then that’s worth paying a professional to do right and well. Quality service costs more because it’s worth more.
