How to Get the Best Depth of Field: Wide Angle Vs. Telephoto

Thursday, December 31st, 2009
Alex Don asked:

As someone who is passionate about, you are probably interested in knowing how to include more depth of field in your photos. There is a lot of literature on this subject. If you’re a professional photographer, you’ve probably learned some things about wide angle (shorter focal length) and telephoto lenses (long focal length). For years photography textbooks and magazines have been promoting the idea that a wide-angle lens provides more depth of field compared to a telephoto one. However, if you type ‘depth of field’ on Google, you will soon come across a lot of articles arguing this assumption.

Recent tests taken by experts, including several photo magazines, have proven that, technically speaking, a wide-angle length does not provide more depth of field. These tests are quite easy and you can conduct them yourself to verify the conclusions. But how does this impact your work as a photographer? All these tests assume that you keep the picture size constant. They go like this: take a photo of some subject using a telephoto and then zoom out and use the wide angle lens. You can also use interchangeable telephoto and wide angle lenses. Then take the photo made with the short focus lens and enlarge a selected portion of it until is the same size as the same portion in the other photo. You will see that there is no significant difference between them. This proves that wide angle lenses don’t actually provide more depth of field.

Now, let’s see why you actually zoom out. Say you are in front of an amazingly beautiful scenery, such as a mountain landscape beautifully colored with sunrise light. You zoom in and take the picture with a telephoto setting. Then you zoom out and take the photo using the wide angle setting. You expect to get more depth of field with the last photo and that’s what it looks like. You would never think that if you enlarge a portion of it this apparent depth of field will disappear. When you use a wide angle setting, you zoom out because you want to capture more things in your picture. You are aware that the objects will look smaller and it doesn’t bother you. In the same way, when you zoom in you want to focus on a certain aspect of the photo even though you know you will loose depth of field. Zooming in and out and using different focal length setting makes you perceive that the depth of field also varies. Photos taken with the wide angle appear to include more depth of field compared to those taken with the telephoto. This may not be true technically. But what is in fact a photograph? What appears to the viewer. If you don’t place technical correctness above everything else, you should stick to what you’ve known and has proven right for years. As long as you like what you get, why drop it? Your photos will prove if you are on the right path or not.

Picking the Right Wedding Photographer

Sunday, December 27th, 2009
April asked:

Keeping the memory alive is one of the most important job descriptions of a photographer. He or she alone will be responsible for keeping the memory tangible. With that, whenever you have a special event, a wedding, birthday or baptismal perhaps, you need to pick the right photographer that can keep the memory alive in a beautiful and special way.

There are many people who take pictures for a living but only a chosen few have the right to be called a photographer. How then will you choose the right photographer for your special event? Here are some pointers:

1. Make a list of photographers that you have in mind. From the list you now have several prospects to choose from. You can ask your friends, relatives, etc for photographers that they have already worked with.

2. Most photographers nowadays already has websites, so either Google them or check out their website, if you have the address. In their websites, they have a portfolio of their work. From there, check out the work of the photographer that will suit best with your taste.

3. For those photographers that does not have a website, you can visit their shop to check out the work that they have done, they would be more than happy to entertain you and answer any questions that you have. However, remember not to pick that photographer right then and there, be sure to compare it first to the other photographers in your list. Then rank the top three photographers of your choice on your list .

4. To avoid wasting your time, only contact the top three on your list ( provided that you have not visited their shop yet), once you have made contact, you can now personally talk to the photographer and ask the questions that you would want to ask. With this interview, you can now find out, which photographer you are most comfortable with. Remember, being comfortable with a photographer, can really bring out the best in you and with that beautiful pictures will follow.

5. During the interview, you can explain to the photographer what kind of event or occasion that will be held. After that, you can then ask him or her if he or she have had any experience with a similar event , if they do, then you can ask them how will he or she make the photos in that event special or unique from the other similar events that they have handled. In this particular are, you really have to take note of their answers, since this is the deciding factor on which photographer you should pick for your special event.

6. Another thing to remember is there are photographers that specialize in certain areas such as wedding, studio portraits, corporate events, birthdays and others.

With those pointers, picking the right Wedding photographer will not be difficult anymore. A photographer will shoulder a big responsibility in any events, so you really have to pick the right Wedding photographer that will keep the memory alive in a beautiful and unforgettable way.

The Photo Journalism With Digital Camera

Sunday, December 27th, 2009
Alex Don asked:

The people who take up photo journalism are those who look for news. In essence they are different breed of people who are inquisitive and are very alert and always look out for news under strange or unexpected situations. The most remarkable attribute of a good photo journalist’s is his or her anticipation of an event, which he/she posses a gut feeling or sense something dramatic will happen. This is apparent among the journalist photographers who are present at the scene or happening. The photo journalists posses eye for detail capturing the very interesting action news. The photo journalist use the photo images effectively to depict the actual news or the story of any particular news event. In other words, photo journalism has become an exciting profession for people who look for challenge and excitement.

The photo journalist has the eye for a captivating news photo. It is the intuitive, alert mind and sharp eye that gives the photo journalist the edge in choosing the visual image that will tell the news most effectively. In photo journalism taking photos at the right moment is vital.

1.Use Appropriate Camera Equipment

If you want to become the photo journalist, you should not only have the eye for deatail and also should be bold enough to get in to the middle of the action irrespective of the camera equipment you possess.

2. The Compact Digital Camera

If you are a new to photo journalism, depending on the circumstances, initially the compact camera may be adequate instead of a Digital SLR. The advantage of compact camera is it can be concealed and conveniently used if in a sensitive or an undercover situation where the photographers personal safety is at a risk. However, there are limitations on using digicam for photojournalism. For example, the lens and zooming capability will not help the photographer to take photos at distance from the subject. In other words, you need to go closer to the subject if you need any clear pictures.

Similarly, the response time of compact digital camera is very slow, as a result volatile or quick action situations where the journalist have to move fast, the digicam may not be able to capture the seen owing to slow response. The main reason is the zoom and sensors which are electronically operated takes a few seconds to get activated . In essence, the main disadvantage of compact digital camera is its slowness in capturing images. When compared to the DSLR cameras which has the auto and manual operations, most photo journalists would agree that digicam is very slow.

3.Digital SLR Camera

If you use DSLR instead digicam, you are able to capture exact moment, by pressing the shutter release button. In other words, DSLR can be zoomed very fast manually, and you can see the actual seen through the view finder rather than the LCD. Hence, you can at once capture the moment by pressing the shutter release button using hand and eye coordination.

Having look at the advantages and the disadvantages of compact digital camera and the DSLR, one should realize that photo journalism not only selecting the right equipment. At the same time using the correct judgement to choose the right equipment at the correct time.

Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer Can be Easy, if You Choose the Right Wedding Photo Retouching Company

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009
Doug Walls asked:

Your big day is approaching. You’ve spent months and thousands of dollars on planning the perfect wedding day. You’ve got the best spot in town for the ceremony, the best caterer and even the best cake designer in the area. There’s one crucial thing that a lot of people leave until the last minute that can make or break the wedding. Yes, it’s the wedding photographer.

How important is the photographer to your wedding? You might think you can get the cheapest photographer with a decent photographer out there, but be warned. In 30 years, you will not be able to wear your dress or your tuxedo. No one will remember the food or what color the chair covers were. The only thing you will have to really pass on from your wedding are the photos taken by your photographer. That’s why it’s important to get the best wedding photographer you can afford for your wedding photos.

However, there is a way you can save a considerable amount on your wedding photography and still have great photos. How? Simply choose a photo retouching company that can edit all of your photos as soon as you get them. You see, wedding photographers usually provide you with a disc of all your photos in digital form. If they don’t, then just ask them, as most will if you build it into your agreement up front.

After you’ve received your photos, just go to a wedding photo retouching company, like us, FixUpPix.com. No doubt, even the best photographers take photos that can use some help. We see those photos everyday at FixUpPix.com. You may have a photo that is perfect except for one person standing in the background. Or the best photo of the bride may capture the groom squinting his eyes. This photo would be ruined if it weren’t for wedding photo retouching. A photo retoucher can fix all of these issues, as well as generally enhance the color and beauty of each of your photos. Most will even give you a package price if you have multiple photos. You will find that the price of fixing your wedding photos is often far cheaper than hiring the best wedding photographer, and you know with retouching you will get the results you want.

How to Photograph Firewoks Displays – Photography Techniques

Monday, December 14th, 2009
Affendy Ahmad asked:

How to Photograph Firewoks Displays? These are most questions that i had received from readers and most had a feeling that its really hard to capture. I could understand that as capturing a fireworks display always involve the elements of both darkness and brightness. The darkness of the sky or the surroundings and the brightness of the fireworks or sometimes the foreground.

My simple adviced to all is “grab you camera equipments and give it a try” whenever theres a fireworks displays in and around your area.

Below are some useful tips to help you get started.

Planning

Planning is the most important when photograhing Fireworks Displays and this is what most people tend to ignore. Always get to the location early. Be sure of where the fireworks are being setup and what part of the sky will it be lighting up. Try asking the organisors if possible of what they are planning. Look around the location and take note of the lightings and surroundings. You might want to decide now on what lenses and the focal lengths to use. Remember the first and most important thing in fireworks photography is planning and anticipation.

Framing and Focusing

Where to aim your camera? This is one of the most difficult part in photographing fireworks dislays. You normally need to aim your camera before the fireworks goes off. I normally spend most of my time looking in the sky rather then looking at my view finder so that i could see whats happening around me and also anticipate the moment or the right time to shot.

Always manually focus your camera or put it on infinity. Its quite impossible to use auto focus mode in low light and you may end up missing a lot of shots. So set your focusing in advanced and fix your focal lengths but remember to ajust your focusing if you happen to change your focal lengths.

Shutter Speed

Its not necessary to set your shutter speed to a very low setting. The temptation to keep your shutter open too long is because its dark and you need to do that. The problem is that fireworks itself are bright and you might over expose them and you may end up not having a clean and nice shot. What you may get is too much of the smoke in you photograph.

Aperture

What aperture to use in Photographing Fireworks Dispalys? Many people thinks that they need to open up the aperture in order to capture them right. But remember, the lights that fireworks emit is quite bright. I normally set my aperture between mid to smaller f stop and i find it tend to work well. And again it will also depends on what shutter speed you have selected.

ISO

Shot using the lowest ISO possible.

Capturing the Mood and Surroundings

When photographing Fireworks Displays many people tend to just capture the Fireworks and forgetting the foreground or the background. Remember Fireworks Displays are often relates to celebrations and occasions and I personally feels your picture must relates to the occasions and it must tell you where, what and when. Dont forget to include other elements such as people, landmarks or other perspectives to make your photograph more meaningful and the Fireworks Display looking more spectacular.

Take as Many Shots as Possible and Track Results

Keep taking as many shots as possible and do a quick check occasionally. But remember….. dont check after every shot or you may end up missing the action!!! You might not have enough time. If you are using Digital Camera take advantage of it and keep on taking.
