Digital Photography is all the rage when it comes to taking pictures. Unlike convential cameras, the 35mm variety, you are able to view pictures immediately after you take them, decide whether or not you want to keep them and so much more. Also unlike 35mm cameras, digital cameras give you the ability to store your photos on a memory card, giving you the potential of taking literally hundreds of photos without running out of film.

The biggest advantage of digital is its flexibility. You will no longer need to carry separate cameras to shoot in black and white or color. Most digital cameras come with a knob or digital menu that allow you to choose how you want the picture to be taken. Additionally, digital is the only format that allows duplication with no loss of quality.

Digital photographs can be easily shared through email, jump drives and through the internet with onlin photo galleries where you can send share links to friends that allows them to view the photos or a slide show. I personally use Kodak Gallery.

In this article I want to give you digital photography enthusiasts some tips on making your experience as an amateur (who knows maybe some pros also) digital photographer even better.

If you are into digital photography, acquaint yourself with a product called Adobe Photoshop. You may have already heard of it, but for those who haven`t this is a powerful piece of software that allows you to edit your photos to your wildest imagination. To give you an example, you can make pictures more clear, and add words. These are just a few of the basic items you get with Photoshop. With the release of Photoshop Lightroom you now have a professional photo management system for your digital photographs. According to Rob Schoeben of Apple Computers Inc., “the Photoshop Lightroom is about pulling the beauty out of image. The new program helps users to browse and manage images.”

With any type of camera you will need a good lense. Without going into specific brands here are a couple of tips. Zoom lenses used in most digital cameras are insufficient for nature photography. Prime lenses offer the highest optical quality to digital photographers and Super zoom cameras are perfect to capture a sporting event.

As with all hobbies and other subjects you can find a variety of tutorials and books on digital photographty. Some include, “The Perfect Picture,” by Bryan E. Peterson which offers beginners a strong foundation from exposure to composition on DVD format, “SureShot System” is another DVD course from Big Picture Enterprises. The short course “Fundamentals of Digital Photography: Getting the Most Out of Your Digital SLR” includes audio CDs.

The power of technology has lent itself to make digital photography a wonderful and enjoyable hobby for all. With these tips and further educating yourself on the matter, you can snap (or is it record?) your favorite photo and make it look like a pro took it, in no time.

With the rise of digital photography in the last decade, many photographic purists have lamented the declining use of good old fashioned printed photographs. In fact, digital photography is, by and large, much preferable to the now outdated camera film reel and offers a wide range of benefits that not only include better quality pictures, higher resolution and more options for storage, but also – to the evident delight of many – the option to print!

Historically, the earliest cameras were first developed in the tenth century by a Persian mathematician, but photographic processing and chemical photography didn’t actually come to light until the nineteenth century, when a French inventor came up with the first permanent photograph in 1826. This first photographic print took a whole eight hours to expose and, while traditional photography made long strides in order to reduce the time it took to process photos, it wasn’t until the birth of digital photography that photographers were truly freed of the need to be within close access to processing facilities.

Commercial digital photography is often said to have begun with the unveiling of the Kodak DCS 100 in 1990, but the high cost of digital cameras meant that its uses didn’t stray much away from professional photographers and photo journalists. It was only in the late 1990s and early 2000s that digital photography began to find its way into the home. The take-up of digital cameras became so widespread that in 2004, Kodak announced it would no longer be producing re-loadable film cameras, with both Nikon and Canon following suit in 2006.

It’s clear that digital cameras offer both the professional and amateur photographer a range of benefits. With a traditional re-loadable camera, printed photos that turned out blurry or were unwanted would simply have to be thrown away, with the processing fee already paid for. However, with digital cameras, it’s easy to delete photos that you don’t want – making more room for photos that you do.

Additionally, digital photo printing has become much more widely available today. In the early days of home digital cameras, printing out digital photos was largely confined to in-home printers, with only the best quality colour ink cartridges being able to cope with such high resolution images. If you can keep the three following tips in mind while photographing your pet you can almost be assured of a satisfying result.  You can use these tips as a springboard to ever more sophisticated and creative pet portraiture.

Tip Number One:

Get Down.  Get down onto your pet’s level.  Seeing your pet at eye level makes a shot inherently more interesting.  We are always looking down at them, but by shooting them at eye level we not only get a more interesting perspective, but you can also achieve stronger connection.

Tip Number Two:

Focus on your pet’s eyes.  Even if you don’t get anything else sharp, get the eyes sharp.  In fact, if your pet’s eyes are sharp, and nothing else, it can even be a creative plus.  Again, the connection you establish with your subject will be much stronger if the eyes are sharp, and connection is ultimately what it is all about.

Tip Number Three:

Get the light right.  Having the light behind you a little to the left or right almost guarantees your pet will be well lit.  Not necessarily the most interesting light, but I’d rather have well lit than a featureless blob.  If you want to get a little more sophisticated, set your flash to 1/3 under exposed (if you have an adjustable camera and flash) and have the available light from behind or slightly behind your subject matter.  Using a flash, even in bright light, is probably a good idea as long as the flash does not overpower the existing light.  Using the flash as a supplement is known as “Fill Flash”.  It can bring out the subtle details as well as adding a “catch light” to your pet’s eyes.  Adding a simple catch light can bring an otherwise drab image to life.

Tip Number Four:

Center yourself, not the picture.  You’re focusing on the eyes, right?  Make sure those eyes are not in the center of the picture. Most people center the eyes leaving a lot of empty space at the top of the frame.  Try putting your pet’s eyes on the upper right or left quadrant for a starting point.  And fill the frame; it is hard to be too close!

Tip Number Five:

Get your pet’s attention.  You have the eyes in focus.  The composition is looking good.  Now get your pet’s attention.  It might be calling their name, making a noise, or even having a friend hold a treat just above your head.  But be prepared.  You want to press that shutter point just when your pet’s eyes zero in on you and his or her ears perk up.  That precious look usually only lasts a fleeting moment, but capture it and you’ll have a picture you can treasure forever.

In my last article, I described the power of Creative Commons (CC) licensing and how to use it to your advantage to find high quality pictures to make your blog or website more compelling. In order to take advantage of the vast collection of freely distributable CC content you can find on sites like Flickr, however, you need to attribute that content back to the author, and describe the license that the author has granted for that piece of content. According to CreativeCommons.org, that license will fall into one of four categories, or a combination :

“Attribution: You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work – and derivative works based upon it – but only if they give credit the way you request.

Noncommercial: You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work – and derivative works based upon it – but for noncommercial purposes only.

No Derivative Works: You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.

Share Alike: You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work.

Note: A license cannot feature both the Share Alike and No Derivative Works options. The Share Alike requirement applies only to derivative works.”

So now you understand perfectly what to do when you use a CC licensed photo in your blog, right? No? Well, allow me to give you an example. Let’s say you go to Flickr and search their Creative Commons section. You find that adorable picture of a cat dangling from a screen door that would be perfect for Fluffy’s blog. Now what? You have to properly attribute the photo.

How do you do that? Well, according to Creative Commons, if you are using the work without making any changes to it, then you must “keep intact any copyright notices,” credit the author, and provide the URL back to CreativeCommons.org pointing to the license selected. If you are altering the picture (making “derivative use”), then you need to identify that your photo is a derivative work, ie. ‘Photo based on [original work] by [author].”

The best place to do all of this for a photo is in a caption just beneath that cutesy picture of the kitty. If the author specified how you should credit her, be sure to use her language. Otherwise, the caption should begin with something like “Photo by [author].” If you got your picture from Flickr, link back from the name of the photo’s author to their Flickr profile page. And don’t forget to link back to the Creative Commons page for the license you’re using, ie. “Photo by [author] (License: Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs).”

If this seems like a fair amount of work to create the proper attribution, that’s because it is, but hey, you’re getting free creative for your website. And in my next post, I’ll give you some tips for automating the process of creating these captions in Drupal. In the meantime, good hunting!
